Technology Study Shows Spyware's True Threats
By Mitch Johnson, Thu Dec 8th

Spyware, adware and malware are all similar to each other, witheach one attacking user's privacy in a different way and withvarying purposes. is used by different intruders toeither track internet usage information for advertising or tosteal personal information and sell it which could lead toidentity theft.

In a study done in an IDC based out of Massachusetts it waspredicted that money spent on internet security from spywarewill jump from $12 million in the U.S. during 2003 to $305million once 2008 rolls around. The study said most spywaresecurity providers will continue to compete for having the topmarket products, including big name virus security companiessuch as Norton and McAfee who will release their spywaresoftware to compete with already established anti-spywareproviders. Millions of computers, mostly PCs, have been andcontinue to be infected with spyware, with the study estimating67 percent of computers with an infection already.

Spyware makes itself difficult for users to rid of because itinfects a computer's registry keys which can be touchy and hardto understand. The IDC study suggested that while key players inthe security industry are currently companies such asWebroot and PestPatrol, the large anti-virus companies willbegin to provide software to dominate the industry.

It was said by those involved in the study that

McAfee has begunwork on anti-spyware software and Norton is predicted to befollowing closely behind in those efforts. Another uniquecharacteristic of is that removal tools do not detectall infections when a scan is performed because it is sodiverse. Several different scanning tools will catch spywarethat another tool did not. Persons from the IDC study predictedNorton and McAfee and similarly trusted and known anti-virusvendors will take over the security because technologycompanies already have a relationship built with these companiesand they will only want trusted tool vendors.

The IDC report officials also said is most threateningto business because all their information and their customer'sinformation can be stolen using spyware. also hinders acomputer's functioning which in turn brings down a businessesproductivity levels. Personal computer users are also concernedabout private and possible harmful information being taken byspyware. Some recent news has also said that organized crime setups have turned to as a method for stealing information.
